  • Certificate of no marriage record for foreign applicants in Shanghai after effectiveness of Hague Convention 2024-07-17
  • On November 7, 2023, the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents (“Hague Convention”) officially took effect in China. The effectiveness of the Hague Convention led to some changes in the materials required for marriage registration involving foreign citizens in China. Staff from Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau answered a number of questions toward these changes, including the specific materials to be prepared for marriage registration, how foreign citizens can apply for a certificate of no marriage record, and what to do if the certificate only writes “the applicant meets the criteria to get married”.
